Slutzkin family in Melbourne

Elcon Baevski decided to emigrate to Australia and on 15 October 1896 arrived in Melbourne [through Bremen Germany] and met up with a relative, Lasar Slutzkin (1868-1945), who ran a drapery business.

Elcon was offered a job as a country traveller hawking wares for Lasar Slutzkin throughout central Victoria. Simcha arrived in Melbourne on 18 August 1899, via Odessa and Palestine, and began working also for Lasar Slutzkin as a hawker.

Once in Australia Elcon and Simcha adopted Myer as their surname in honour of their older brother, Jacob Myer Baevski, who had unexpectedly died in 1896. Simcha became known as Sidney Myer and Elcon was referred to as E.B. Myer.

Intelligence arrived last week by cable of the death, on the 4th inst., at Jaffa (Palestine), of Mr. Leib Slutzkin, the father of Messrs. Lazur and Salom J. Slutzkin, the well-known manufacturers, of Flinders-lane, Melbourne, whose strong attachment to traditional Judaism and practical interest in all communal institutions have gained them the esteem of the whole community. They are both sons-in-law of Mr. P. Blashki, J.P., and the former is at present in England, having been in Jaffa only a few weeks ago. Mr. Leib Slutzkin, who was sixty-four years old at the time of his death, was a native of Kritcheff (near Mohileff), Russia, he emigrated, with his family, to Palestine about thirteen years ago [1899], and resided at the Jewish colony, "Rehoboth," in the neighbourhood of Jaffa, where he devoted practically all his time to Hebrew and Talmudical studies. His early years had been passed in the Yeshiba, and he was well versed in all branches of Jewish learning. He leaves surviving him a widow and three children—two sons and one daughter, Mrs. Kuck, who lives in Jaffa.

Messrs. Slatzkin's warehouse in Flinders lane was closed (during the whole week of mourning. It is the intention of Mr. S. J. Slutzkin to have Minyan at the Monteliore Hall, St. Kilda-road, every morning during the ensuing year.

A Melbourne family activates a generational change in a long history of charitable donations…

For many years, while leading successful retail businesses, Laser Slutzkin and his brother Sholom, were known as true advocates for the needs of our community. Immigrants from Czarist Russia, they created numerous work places for community members and newcomers, offered a helping hand to those in need, made generous contributions to synagogues and lived their lives with a genuine spirit of giving.

Following the philanthropic beliefs of her grandfather Sholom and great uncle Laser, Susan Zimmerman, and her mother Alys Slutzkin, continue the generational chain of supporting our community.

Recently, Susan and Alys donated two beautiful Mishnah sets to St Kilda Hebrew Congregation, Montefiore Homes Community Residence and Gary Smorgon House, in memory of Susan’s grandfather Sholom and father, Robert Eliot Slutzkin.

Rabbi Meir Shlomo Kluwgant, Jewish Care’s General Manager of Cultural and Spiritual Services, was thrilled to welcome the new set of holy books into the Montefiore Shul. This synagogue is located in the Slutzkin Wing, named after Sholom Slutzkin, past President and Board Member of the Montefiore Homes, who was responsible for its first complete renovation in 1945.
