LONG SEA TRIP. TO JOIN THE AIF.
Keen to do their bit, and proud of the exploits of the AIF, two young men have travelled thousands of miles from the Far East to join up in Sydney. They are W. G. Schnabel, a wine merchant from Hong Kong, and Alex Krilovsky, former assistant manager of the Repulse Bay Hotel, at Hong Kong.
Mr. Krilovsky, Russian-born, but now a British subject, spent some time in Manila (Philippine Islands), before coming to Australia. "I wanted to get into the fight somewhere, and three times I wrote to the British Consul at Manila, offering my services." he said to-day. "Then I saw him and he said he could do nothing.

"I packed up and paid my way to Australia. I saw an Australian soldier the other day for the first time. Now, after a holiday in a city of white people, I will enlist."
Mr. Schnabel, a tall, young Englishman said he was a distant relative of Arthur Schnabel, the famous pianist. His branch of the family moved to England 90 years ago.
"The A.I.F. is not the nearest fighting force I can join, but it is the most active, and that is why I am here," he said.
"Getting out of Hong Kong was difficult. They do not want young men to leave, and for ll months I tried to get away. At last I got permission, but I left the colony as a 'destitute British I subject. ""
