A SYDNEY FIRE.
Rescues From Russian Club.
SYDNEY, Tuesday.— A fire at 4.30 a.m. to-day did considerable damage in a block of buildings in Goulburn street which were occupied by Harris Bros., drapers and mercers; Madam Eske, dress manufacturer, and the Russian Club. It was found necessary to break down the door of the club to rescue several Russians who were sleeping there. All were liberated before the flames reached them. The damage was estimated at about £4000.
After the fire a new location has been found. This is how the building looked in 1918 just before the potential demolition.
The question is whether the building was in fact knocked down. It is known that the building caught fire in 1950.
"White Russian Club on the top floor, of two-storey Cropley Chambers, 800 George-street Haymarket. The Russian Club was burnt out shortly after a dance had been held on the premises. ' ; Firemen from five stations fought the flames for an hour and poured thousands of gallons of water from hoses on high extension; ladders to prevent the fire spreading , to nearby, buildings. .The weight of the water caused the first floor to collapse and valuable machinery on the ground floor was damaged. Total 'damage ' was estimated " to ran into thousands of pounds."
This was the end of the club. But not of the building.
800 George st today. Note that the building on the left is the same as in 1918.
