In 1930s St George's Syrian Orthodox Church has been used as a place for a small number of weddings by a tiny community of "White Russians" mainly.
Father Innocentiy Seryshev (Иннокентий Серышев) was leading the wedding of Nina
Shaparoff [Нина Шарапова] and Stephan Fedoroff [ Степан Федоров].
Weddings were also performed in a Melbourne's branch of the church.
Traditional Orthodox religious weddings were a new thing in Australia and have been followed by reporters.
"I, Nina, take 'thee, Stephan . But the marriage of two young Russians in St. George's Syrian '
Orthodox Church .at Redfern wasn't half as' simple as that. "For one hour and a quarter Nina
Shaparoff and Stephan Fedoroff stood on a square of pink satin before the altar, with six bridesmaids and their attendants grouped behind them, until they were finally' made man and wife to the satisfaction of Father Inocentio Serisev ( Иннокентий Серышев).
....There are five daughters in the Shaparoff family, and a son, Boris, and they live on the poultry farm at Parramatta.
