Fomin Place, Katherine East, NT

Fomin Place Named after Ivan aka John Fomin, who was born in Russia in 1897 and came to Australia in 1926 to work on the Katherine and Larrimah Railway. He later grew peanuts and mangoes on the Katherine River. Died in 1974.

17/8/1896 Born Znamenskoe, Moscow Province. 

1914-1921 Lieutenant in Army, served with same rank under Kolczack in the Civil War

1921 Left Russia for Iraq. 

1922 Manila, Philippines. 

1926 Manila to Townsville .

1926 El Arish ( QLD )

1926 Darwin

1929 Katherine, works on final stages of railway construction.

1929 Farms block 197 with Ivanetz, Droojinin and Zueff

1930 -1933 Farms block 97 alone, and block 167 with Tokmakoff 

1934 Acquires and farms block 165

1936-1937 Darwin, works on Railway, and clears land during off - season.

1941 -1946 Darwin / Katherine, works as fitter in the Railway workshops.

1945 Naturalized.

1948 Last season farming, moves to Darwin to work with the Railway. 

1958 Surrenders lease of block 165

3 October 1974 Dies in a car accident in Darwin 

Was married to Maria and they had one son. Known as John, a quiet bloke, said to always have a cigarette dangling from the side of his mouth. Described as 5' 10", fair hair, blue eyes.
