Первая русская библиотека в Сиднее - 1915

В декабре 1915 года значатся Сиднейское отделение помощи политическим ссыльным и каторжанам и Сиднейская библиотека (секретарь — тов. Зелёнов), 330 Castlereagh St. Sydney

В 1916 г. не раз о сиднейских русских писал и Герман Быков (А. Резанов); из его довольно критических корреспонденций следует, что центром русской жизни в этом году была русская библиотека, где по воскресным вечерам проходили «„дебаты”, „диспуты”, а попросту говоря, разговоры о том, о сём, а больше ни о чём». Причину слабости сиднейской организации он видел в том, что она имела в своих рядах «бывших интеллигентов».

Back in 1915 it was the premises of I.W.W. Hall (the Industrial Workers of the World in New Zealand and Australia), 330 Castlereagh St., Sydney.

The building opposite the fire station still stands. It was built in 1877 in the Victorian architectural style for the New South Wales Protestant Hall Company Ltd (gospel hall).

It was one of the venues for a series of talks by Samuel Clements (Mark Twain) and is known for the first public airing of Australia's national anthem "Advance Australia Fair" on 30 November 1878.

It is listed on the Register of the National Estate. The building was renamed Empire House in the mid-1920s and in 1938 was taken over by the Australian Workers Union as the headquarters. It was sold in 1979 but remained derelict for many years. It was redeveloped in 2013 and now houses "Alpha" a Greek restaurant and "Foodstore" cafe on the ground floor, with "The Hellenic Club" on the upper floors.
